The call
- Saudi East-West restart CONFIRMED (Reuters, this morning). Yanbu exports could resume later Tuesday — first cargo to China, at a low rate — with the line targeting ~4 mb/d. Brent fell $2+ to its lowest since September 8.
- WTI October expired today. Monday's settle was $95.78, down 4.51% — the fourth straight down day, roughly -$10 over four sessions.
- Tuesday's Asian Brent prints conflict: one set shows a diplomacy bounce above $101, another shows -2.46% at $97.87 on an unverified Kyodo report of Hormuz reopening. One of them is wrong; don't trade the gap until it's resolved.
Geopolitics through a supply/demand lens
- Hormuz escalation. A tanker was struck by a projectile on Sep 21 (UKMTO); CENTCOM redirected 109 vessels and traffic fell to ~3 crossings a day. A US-sanctioned Chinese tanker crossed despite the blockade.
- Trump–Pezeshkian. Trump addressed UNGA this morning — reportedly in "deciding mode," likely open to a meeting with Iran's president. Tehran laid out 7 conditions via Qatar.
- Trump–Zelensky met today on an energy-infrastructure truce; the Russia/Iran sanctions tariff law is signed — up to 100% tariffs on the top buyers of Russian oil, effective within 30 days.
- Ukraine's Sep 19–20 drone barrage on Moscow was its largest of 2026; the Moscow refinery (~245 kb/d) was reportedly hit — the claim is unverified.
Canada: refineries
- BP Whiting returned to normal operations Monday (Reuters); USW talks are today after a roughly six-month lockout, with a strike authorized.
- Joliet: still no confirmed restart. Power was resolved Sep 18, but no restart date has been given and the IIR restart estimate has lapsed.
Cracks & positioning
- ICE gasoil crack near $95/bbl, vs a $74 August average (ING); the 3-2-1 held flat near $69.5. No public prints for the HSFO, light-heavy, or condensate crack gauges.
- Brent managed-money net length: 282,657 contracts (+16.9k, highest since May, as of Sep 15). WTI around 106k — one source reports ~118k on the same dataset, so treat the level as approximate.
What we're watching
